Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by furniture and homecare products could lead to sick building syndrome and physical ailments such as heart diseases, respiratory diseases, and cancers. Effective methods to purify air in built environments are therefore in great demand. The invention disclosed here is installed with a catalyst-coated porous structure which serves as a filter for treating gaseous effluents. VOCs trapped in the filter will then be decomposed into water vapour and carbon dioxide.
